Let me be upfront with you from the start: I don’t fit neatly into a box.
If you came here expecting fire and brimstone culture war rhetoric, you’re going to be disappointed. If you came here expecting someone to tell you that the government can spend its way out of every problem, you’re going to be equally let down.
What you will get is something that feels increasingly rare in today’s media landscape: a perspective built on fiscal discipline, personal accountability, and a genuine respect for every human being sitting across the table.
My name is Bobby, and this is my column.
Many of you may know me. I grew up right here in White County, went to school here, played sports here, went to church here, and worked here. This community has shaped me in ways I’m still discovering. I even had the privilege of serving White County as a commissioner, which gave me a firsthand education in how government works, where it succeeds, and where it consistently finds new ways to frustrate the people it’s supposed to serve. Life eventually took me to Lebanon, Tennessee, and then a few years ago down to central Florida.
But I want to be clear about something: my heart has never left Sparta. I stay connected, stay informed, and stay involved because this place is part of who I am, no matter the distance.
So yes, you may think you know me. But some of what I write and share might surprise you. And if you’re being honest with yourself, there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself nodding along more than you expected.
Here’s where I stand: I am a fiscal conservative. I believe that money, whether it’s yours, mine, or our local government’s budget, should be spent with intention, accountability, and a clear return on investment. Debt is not a strategy. Bloated bureaucracy is not compassion. Throwing dollars at a broken system without demanding reform isn’t generosity, it’s avoidance. I believe in free markets, hard work, and the ability of communities to solve problems when given the room to do so.
But here’s the part that might raise a few eyebrows. I also believe that a society’s strength is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable. I believe that who you love, how you worship, what you look like, or where your family came from has no bearing on your worth as a person or your right to live freely in this country.
Social progress isn’t a threat to conservative values. A truly free society requires it. You cannot claim to believe in liberty while also deciding it only applies to certain people.
That tension between fiscal responsibility and genuine human decency is exactly where I live. And I believe a whole lot of people in White County live there too, even if they’ve never quite had the words for it.
We’ve been told the only choices are hard left or hard right, that nuance is weakness, and that changing your mind means you never had principles. I reject all of that.
This column will cover local issues, national debates, culture, community, and everything in between. I’ll call out wasteful spending and policies that harm everyday people. I’ll ask uncomfortable questions and demand better answers than talking points and outrage.
I’ll write about Sparta, Tennessee, and this country with the same directness I’d use sitting across from you at a table.
I am not here to be your echo chamber. I’m here to think out loud and honestly, with the same common sense this community instilled in me a long time ago.
Some of what I write will challenge you. Good. The goal of this column isn’t easy agreement. It’s meant to be an honest conversation, and that’s one this community has always deserved.
Welcome to Common Ground. We’re just getting started.
